Lessons in Communication with our Horses

This year has seen the start of groups of students coming from schools as part of their education programme. We are all absolutely loving it and I am continually astonished at the lessons that the horses are teaching us all.

One of our students loves horses and has a great connection with the horses, however the student has zero confidence in a group situation and hardly speaks preferring to use head nods.

This student chose to work one of the horse without ropes in the round pen in front of the group, I was a little concerned as to how this would work if the student was unable to use words, although I knew that the horses would respond to the students internal energy their primary training is with voice for the basic commands of walk, trott, canter, stop, turn etc.

I helped the student get our mare Cookies moving around the round pen then disengaged and observed with the other students. The student in the round pen raised her arms pointing in the direction she wanted the horse to go and Cookies started walking round the pen, the student didn't use words but clicked and this worked as Cookies moved forward into a Trott. Cookies picked up speed and I observed very carefully and pointed out to the other students how the student in the ring was using her body language and internal energy to slow Cookies to a walk and then to a halt without one verbal command. It was very lovely to watch and a fantastic lesson for the student in the arena and the observing students in the power of body language and internal energy.
